Understanding Microphone Types

Tube Condenser

Characterized by warm, rich midrange and smooth high frequencies. Typically have higher self-noise than modern condensers but add a pleasing harmonic saturation. Best for: vocals, brass, strings.

  • Frequency response: typically 20Hz-20kHz with gentle presence rise

Large Diaphragm Condenser

Before You Buy

Check Your Preamp

Tube mics need phantom power and a quality preamp. Some vintage ribbons work best with transformer-coupled inputs. Match your signal chain to the microphone character.

Consider Your Room

Ribbon mics are less sensitive to room reflections. Condenser mics pick up more ambience. If your room is bright, a ribbon might balance it better.

Test Before You Trust

Even the best simulation has limits. If possible, audition a mic before purchase. Many studios rent equipment by the hour for testing.
